Project Overview

The project was launched to address the needs of the textile manufacturing industry by developing new types of garments and strategies to reduce energy consumption and minimise environmental impact, while creating a new class of smart textiles.
TexEMFiRe focuses on the research and development of new textile materials with enhanced electromagnetic shielding (EMS) and fire-retardant (FR) properties. This is achieved through the use of environmentally friendly, low-pressure plasma-based techniques to develop a new class of garments.
The project combines the complementary properties of plasma technology and materials science, bringing together universities, research institutes, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and accredited laboratories from Romania and Italy in close collaboration.

Project Objectives

The specific objectives of the international TexEMFiRe project are to:

    1. Design and manufacture innovative textile materials featuring metallic and insulating barrier layers.Progettare e realizzare materiali tessili innovativi con strati di barriera metallici e isolanti.
    2. Further investigate electromagnetic shielding and fire-retardant properties in order to improve their performance.
    3. Optimise plasma-related processes and material properties to ensure lower operating costs.
    4. Develop business plans based on the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology for use in the textile manufacturing industry.
Tecnolab’s Role in the Project

The project involves a European consortium of researchers from various disciplines.
Tecnolab contributed to the different stages of development by studying, analysing and implementing a measurement system compliant with European standards to measure the attenuation of electromagnetic waves by textiles made from different materials.
