Testing and Measurements of Products and Materials

Electromagnetic Compatibility and Functional Safety According to technical standards

In the automotive sector, electrical and electronic components must ensure reliability, safety, and proper operation even when exposed to severe environmental and electromagnetic stresses.
Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and electrical/functional safety tests play a fundamental role in ensuring that every device installed in a vehicle operates correctly without interfering with other systems or being affected by them, in compliance with EMC Directive 2014/30/EU for automotive applications and with the technical specifications issued by vehicle manufacturers (OEMs).

Testing and Measurements

EMC testing includes conducted and radiated emissions and immunity tests, electrostatic discharge (ESD) tests, transient disturbances on power supply and signal lines (ISO 7637), radiated field immunity tests (ISO 11452), and in-vehicle electromagnetic interference tests (CISPR 25), in accordance with OEM requirements and the relevant technical specifications.

In parallel, electrical safety and functional robustness tests are performed, including insulation verification, dielectric strength testing, protective earth continuity checks, leakage current measurements, and resistance to electrical faults. These tests not only protect the end user but are also essential to ensuring the integrity and reliability of vehicle systems, particularly where multiple interconnected electronic devices are involved.

The overall objective of these tests is to ensure that every electronic component intended for integration into automotive systems fully meets the safety, robustness, and environmental compatibility requirements specified by vehicle manufacturers, and can operate reliably throughout the vehicle’s entire service life.
