Bioengineering / Nanotechnology
The field of regenerative medicine has developed rapidly in recent years. Cell therapies are beginning to be used on a large scale, a significant number of artificial tissues have already been produced and studied, and bioreactor technology is making progress.
Despite these advances, reference samples and measurement protocols are still lacking, making it difficult to guarantee the safety of processes and products.
The Metregen project was established specifically to help address this gap by developing innovative measuring instruments, methods for validating cell culture processes, and reference materials and methods for use in regenerative medicine processes and products.
A more effective metrology system in healthcare is fundamental to the more reliable and efficient use of diagnostic and therapeutic techniques, as well as to the development of new technologies needed to improve healthcare provision and patient care.
The project aims to develop traceable measurement technologies to characterise cellular and macromolecular behaviour in regenerative medicine products and processes.
This objective is made possible through close collaboration between the Italian National Metrology Institute, universities in Piedmont, and partner companies. The partners combine their expertise in nanoscale measurement techniques, tissue engineering, stem cell genetics and chemistry to advance research into measurement methods and technologies for regenerative medicine.
Tecnolab carried out a study of the morphology and measurements of supports known as bioreactors, on which artificial organs were subsequently intended to be grown.
